What Is Photophobia?
Photophobia is an eye condition that is commonly referred
to as light-sensitivity. Though the term implies “fear” (phobia), it is actually
a physical response to too much light entering the eye through the pupil. This
response can include eye discomfort, eye pain and averting your eyes in bright
light situations.
There are any number of underlying medical conditions or
triggers that could lead to light-sensitivity—a scratched cornea or damaged
retina, an eye infection or disease, even a drug reaction. Since many of the
underlying conditions that lead to photophobia may or may not be obvious, it’s
always a good idea to wear lenses that offer 100% UV protection, just in case.
Photophobia presents itself with very real symptoms, and
can be evidence of a serious threat to healthy sight. Should you develop sudden
or gradual light-sensitivity, please don’t hesitate to see your eyecare
professional.
